SKU 75570 Category

New York ironweed is a tall, clump-forming perennial, growing 5-8 ft. in height. Slightly rough stems bear lance-shaped, deep-green leaves. Small flower heads occur in large, loosely branched, flat-topped, terminal clusters. Flowers are all of the disk type and deep reddish-purple in color. Tall erect stem branches toward the summit, with each branch bearing a cluster of deep lavender to violet flower heads; together, clusters form a loose spray.

This often roughish plant is common in wet open bottomland fields.

Product Description

Vernonia noveboracensis (New York Ironweed) is a striking North American native perennial prized for its tall, upright growth habit and vibrant clusters of deep purple flowers. Blooming from mid to late summer, this long-lived native plant provides an important source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators at a time when many other native plants are beginning to fade.

New York ironweed is an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, native plant gardens, meadows, rain gardens, wetland edges, and naturalized landscapes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs particularly well in moist to consistently damp soils, making it a valuable addition to areas with challenging wet conditions. Its impressive height and bold flower clusters create a strong vertical element in the landscape, while its late-season blooms provide valuable wildlife habitat and seasonal color.

With its ecological benefits, distinctive appearance, and adaptability to moist sites, Vernonia noveboracensis is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to incorporate beautiful, wildlife-supporting native plants into their landscape.
